Common Dental Emergencies We Treat in Indianapolis

In Pain or Dealing With a Dental Issue?

Most dental emergencies start with sudden pain, swelling, or damage that won't wait until tomorrow. Our emergency dentist team identifies the problem quickly and guides you toward the right next step — whether that involves restorative dentistry, root canal therapy, or simple pain relief and follow-up through general dentistry.

  • Severe Tooth Pain or Toothache

Ongoing or throbbing pain that worsens with pressure, temperature, or biting dow

  • Cracked, Broken, or Chipped Teeth

Structural damage that exposes nerves and worsens quickly without prompt treatment

  • Knocked-Out Teeth

Time-sensitive emergency — the first 30–60 minutes are critical to save the tooth

  • Dental Abscess, Swelling or Infection

Signs of spreading infection like swelling, fever, or pus — needs urgent attention

  • Lost Fillings or Broken Crowns

Restorations that fall out leaving teeth vulnerable to pain and further damage

  • Soft Tissue Injuries & Bleeding Gums

Cuts, trauma, or persistent bleeding from the gums, lips, cheeks, or tongue

What To Do During a Dental Emergency

Taking the right first steps can reduce pain, prevent complications, and improve the outcome of your emergency dental treatment. While you head to our office, follow this quick guidance for the most common situations.

Act Quickly to Protect Your Teeth
  • If symptoms are getting worse — especially pain, swelling, fever, or signs of infection — do not wait. Delaying emergency dental treatment can lead to more serious complications and significantly higher treatment costs.

    • Tooth Pain: Rinse with warm salt water, floss gently to dislodge any food, and avoid chewing on the affected side.

    • Knocked-Out Tooth: Pick the tooth up by the crown (not the root), rinse if dirty, and keep it moist in milk or saline. Bring it with you.

    • Broken or Chipped Tooth: Save any pieces, rinse the mouth with warm water, and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.

    • Swelling or Abscess: Apply a cold compress to the outside of the face and seek care immediately.

    • Lost Filling or Crown: Keep the restoration in a safe place, avoid chewing on that side, and schedule a same-day visit.

    • Bleeding from the Mouth: Apply gentle pressure with clean gauze. If bleeding does not slow within 10–15 minutes, head to an emergency room.

Where to Go for a Dental Emergency vs Medical Emergency

Most dental emergencies should be treated by a dentist, not a hospital. Emergency rooms can manage pain temporarily but are not equipped to repair, replace, or save teeth. However, certain situations involving trauma, breathing, or severe infection require immediate medical attention at a hospital.

Dental Emergency or Medical Emergency?
  • Emergency Dentist

    • Bad toothache that will not go away

    • Tooth got knocked out suddenly

    • Face, gums, or jaw are swollen

    • Filling or crown fell out

    • Signs of a dental infection or abscess

  • Emergency Room

    • Severe facial trauma or injury

    • Uncontrolled bleeding

    • Difficulty breathing or swallowing

    • Serious head or jaw injury

    • High fever with swelling

If you have ongoing pain, swelling, bleeding, a knocked-out or broken tooth, or a lost filling or crown, it is likely a dental emergency. When in doubt, call us — it is always better to have a problem evaluated as soon as possible than to wait and let it worsen.

Pick the tooth up by the crown — never the root — and rinse it gently if it is dirty. Keep it moist in milk or saline, and head to our office immediately. The first 30 to 60 minutes are critical to the chances of saving the tooth.

Costs vary depending on the issue and treatment needed. Simple exams and pain relief are typically the lowest-cost visits, while extractions, root canals, or crown repairs cost more. We provide clear, up-front pricing and discuss your options before starting any treatment.

Emergency rooms can manage severe pain and prescribe antibiotics, but they are not equipped to extract, repair, or replace teeth. Most dental emergencies — including toothaches, broken teeth, and abscesses — should be treated by a dentist for proper, lasting care.
